Giving Him Glory - Sermon

Giving Him Glory

Eliezer Roque Cisneros / Glenwood Springs

The 3 Messages / Glory; Glory of God

Review

“Fear God”

• ‘Fear of the Lord,’ or ‘god-fearing’ is an ancient Hebraic idiom

• The point isn’t what kind of fear it is, the point is obedience and right relationship with Yahweh

An Anatomy of the first message

• The message is contained in one verse, but we often think about the verse before it as helpful to the context of the message

• the two verses are split into 5 small parts and a larger introduction

Rev 14:7 “And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.””

• Dialogue marker

• Call to obedience

• Call to worship

• Motive for obedience

• Motive for worship

Rev 14:6 “Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people.”

• This large chunk introduces the first messenger

• the only messenger with a notable description

• Except… the first messenger is not described.

• only the message is described (euangellion is message in greek - and it’s where we get gospel from - litterally it just means ‘good/beautiful message’)

What is Glory

Recognition

Luke 14:10 “But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you.”

Luke 24: 26 “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory ?””

John 5:43-44 “I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”

• Think here about how God will reject some and say that he never knew them. why?

• because they don’t care about doing works recognized by god, only those recognized by men

Splendor or Brightness / Impressive Regard

Ac 22:11 “And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.”

Luke 5:26 “And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.””
