How to Expel Your Own Demons

If you are currently experiencing an emergency, please hang up and dial 911. This is not a joke, if there is a human or other physical agent actively trying or threatening to cause you actual harm, call 911 right now. This includes but is not limited to, domestic or sexual abuse, murder, kidnapping, a fire, poisoning, sudden medical emergency, someone is unconscious and unresponsive, there is uncontrollable bleeding, serious vehicular accident, gunshots, or any other kind of immediate danger to you or others. Only after this should you pray and call or whatever else you want to do. Again. Call 911. Even if demonic activity is at play, call right now. Prayer has no expiration, but human help requires immediate notification and not doing so is the sin of presumption.

Ok, so you suspect or know that demonic influence is at play. Here are the steps you must take.

Confess All Sins

The first step you should take is to confess your sins to God. This needs a few key components. You should be, as much as your memory allows, specific and clear about what or how you have sinned. You also must confess your sin to God specifically. And by God I mean the creator of heaven, earth, the ocean, matter, time, reality, and even the demons themselves. Most importantly you must pray with a conviction that it was this God who made you. For more information on how to confess your sins, see this instructional: How to Practice Confession. In case you don’t check it out, confession includes forgiving others who have wronged us -- even if they haven't apologized.

Destroy and Discard

The second step is to remove any offending item or practice. If you have made any relic or sign or have in your possession any item that represents any sort of spiritual access point, you need to destroy it immediately. It does not matter if a ritual teaches that a rune offers protection. This is a trap. Destroy everything by way of crushing, shattering, burning, erasing, washing, defacing, or wasting. By “wasting” this means, if it’s a consumable item like a drink or potion, it should be discarded in such a way it cannot be used again. Do not flush harsh chemicals down the toilet, and do not put chemical waste in the soil. If a consumable item cannot be destroyed by anything mentioned above. Leave it and call for an ordained elder or pastor (which is an ordained elder). Continue with the following steps at any stage.

Draw Close to God

The third step is to look for and take actions that bring you closer to God. You’ve already taken one, confession, now you will take more. Please keep in mind that if you are presently being influenced or harassed by spirits, you may experience increased activity as you take these first steps. Steps to personal closeness can include:

  1. Singing or humming praises to God.

  2. Worshiping God aloud by verbally declaring the name and sacrifice of Jesus (sometimes called, praying in the name of Jesus)

    • “Jesus Christ, you are the Alpha and Omega. Your blood was spilled for me for all ages on Calvary’s Hill. Your name is power and your blood is life. Jesus, all things were made by you and for you. The heavens declare your Glory, the lilies declare your love, and all creation sings in anticipation of your soon return. You are the one who was, the one who is, and the one who is to come. You are God. You are King. Son of David have mercy on me.”

    • Alternatively, “Save me Lord Jesus by your blood on my cross”

    • Do not command the demons or spirits at this point.

  3. Read the Holy Scriptures

    1. Any of the following translations will suffice:

      • KJV, NKJV, ESV, Niv, NIrV, NASB, NLT, CSB, NRSV, RSV

    2. If you don’t know where to begin read from any of the following:

      • John; Revelation; Psalm 32; Psalm 150; Genesis 1; Genesis 15; Exodus 15; Psalm 145; Psalm 103; Psalm 100; Psalm 66; 1 Chronicles 16; Isaiah 12; Philippians 4; Matthew 6; Romans 8; Isaiah 41; Psalm 91

  4. Give to the poor (If the danger is not immediate)

  5. Give to the church (If the danger is not immediate)

  6. Visit the elderly and the sick (If the danger is not immediate)

  7. Attend church gatherings (If the danger is not immediate)

  8. Ask a local church leader to pray for you (If the danger is not immediate)

Lock Down Weak Points

The Fourth step is to close weak spiritual avenues. This is often known as fasting. These avenues include but are not limited to: media of any kind (Yes, any kind.), food pleasurable to the senses, drink pleasurable to the senses, consumption of stimulating substances or supplements (think caffeine, nicotine, THC, creatine, ginseng, MDMA, etc.), and any other practice or habit that is conducive to a physical enjoyment. Do not discontinue the use of your prescribed medicine. Simply cut off any possible avenue for your mind to be affected by anything other than your connection to God. So long as the demon has access to your thoughts or feelings, the demon will not leave.

Resist the Devil

Lastly, you will declare that you are resisting the enemy. This may be a spirit, or demon, or something you cannot identify. It doesn’t matter. To say “I resist satan by the blood Jesus spilled for me. His blood covers all my sins. I have submitted to God as my only King.” Is enough of a statement.

What you have done by these steps is to follow the commandment of Scripture: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” -James 4:7

Nothing more is required from you for the expulsion of demons, but I would like you to keep the following precautions in mind.

  1. Demons can and will return unless you fill the power-vacuum with the presence of a spirit considerably stronger than the previous one. Seek the Holy Spirit and do all in your power to maintain that connection. -Matt 12:43-45

  2. If they got in by some means before, they will try through that means again.

  3. There is no real safety in any of the following idols or talismans

    1. Images of the Virgin Mary

    2. Icons of any of the saints

    3. Rosaries

    4. Holy Water

    5. Bibles nor portions of the Bible

    6. Crosses nor crucifixes

    7. Sage of any kind White or otherwise

    8. Salt of any kind

    9. Priestly stole

    10. Body parts

    11. Iron

    12. Silver

    13. Gold

    14. Obsidian

    15. Any crystal or mineral

    16. Palo Santo

    17. Myrrh

    18. Singing bowls

    19. Dream catchers

    20. Chiropractic massages

    21. 5g blocking stickers or phone cases

Clarifications and Admonishments

I'm going to add a few admonishments here for the sake of those zealous in deliverance ministries. Do not speak to the spirits. Do not command the spirits by their names. Do not engage the spirits. Do not ask the spirits questions. Do not jeer or mock or challenge the spirits. None of these practices (nor the attitudes that inspire them) are in harmony with the teachings and examples of Jesus. If you are in the practice of encouraging or teaching others to identify the type or name of the demon and then use that to somehow command them or identify what drives them out, please stop. I know you will not listen, because (harsh truth incoming) many deliverance advocates are deeply misled about how spirits work and take large interpretive leaps in regards to what the Bible says. For more information on such interpretive leaps review my notes on the matter over at the corresponding pastor talk. Last of all, do not believe the spirits. The spirits will say many things. None of them are True. They might be factual, they might even biblical. Do no consider their information as true. They may speak your hidden secret sins, even repented sins into the open. Stand without flinching in the assurance of salvation and forgiveness in the blood of Jesus.

"but pastor what about..."

Ah yes, but what about the countless lived experiences of believers or spiritual folks who have by some other method drawn out spirits? What about the many documented exorcisms preformed successfully by the work of a priest and the employ of holy water or some other thing pastor Eli asserts we shouldn't use? Does pastor Eli seriously believe he knows something more than all the shawmen and healers and priests and holy men and women who have cast out demons by their various means? No. What I believe is what the Bible teaches, and the Bible teaches what little I've shared with you. The rest which I do not teach is human observation. To be a Bible-believing Christian is not to base our methods on observation. We walk not by sight -- do I need to finish that?

Consider the following. You stand face to face with the demonic in your child's bedroom. which will you gamble on? Thousands of years-worth of various practices that varied wildly from practitioner to practitioner with little or no verifiable evidence on the veracity of their claims - and even less certainty on the reproducibility of any given practice, or will you do what the Bible clearly says will work in black and white terms? Let me know. I'd love to see what you'll choose.

Closing Thoughts

In conclusion dear friend, I desire for nothing more than for you to draw close to the Lord. This righteousness is only achieved by the justification of faith in Jesus. Nothing else has the lasting power to overcome powers and principalities that our world is full of. Do not be deceived, demons, though fallen, are very clever creatures. I would like to point you back to Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. There is salvation ONLY in Him.
